Made a living hunched up over a keyboard, now retired. Have published fiction (a couple stories but nowhere you've ever heard of) and non-fiction (articles largely work-related) and was able to make a good living. At one time or another I've carried business cards with "editor" and "publisher" printed on them. Starting out, they set me to work reading the slush pile at Holt Rinehart & Winston on Madison Avenue in New York and that's when I realized the wisdom of Henry James' comment that the first requirement of fiction is that it be interesting.
