"We have to stop her from talking. If she tells anyone, we're done for. Our careers will be over. This all ends." Maxine slammed the car door behind her as she got out, checking for surveillance.

"Is that a threat?" Freddie laughed, completely carefree. It was always like this. Maxine had to wonder how he had become an undercover agent in the first place. His charm must have helped, certainly. His laid-back attitude did not. He placed his hand on hers but she snatched it back.

"Not yet." Maxine pulled from her purse the photo of the perpetrator. "Her current whereabouts are unknown. What the hell are we going to do? She knows everything about what we've been doing. Two years of evidence. We work for two completely different government agencies, we aren't supposed to meet let alone have a relationship. We could be killed for this, Fred."

Freddie's smirk dropped. "Kill her first."

"Good luck with that. Her only distinguishing feature is a single white paw, an auburn ear, and a glittery pink collar." Maxine flicked the photo onto his lap, and smiled proudly. "I chose that myself."

"All the intelligence we avoided to do this, and a damn cat outsmarts us." He shook his head in disbelief. "I'll get Dee onto it. See what she can do. Destroy my mobile phone, I'll be in touch when I cross over into France. Goodbye, Maxine."

She watched as he drove away, wondering when they would next be able to meet. Just as he was about to round the corner out of her street, a raised paw slapped onto the rear window. In the other paw a mobile phone was lit up, ready for use. The cat leapt up and lay smugly where Maxine could watch them drive away. It was the end for their lives as they knew it.

Reads like Mission Impossible or something until the sentence 'Her only distinguishing feature is a single white paw...', at which point I realised this wasn't exactly the straightest story on Burrst...

I actually enjoyed this. As much as I love your serious stuff, the more lighthearted stuff is so great too.
