The Apple don’t fall far from the Tree

He barred back his little lips and hissed in a low and threatening voice, “Stay back.” The kid was sitting in a shopping cart for Pete’s sake! He couldn’t have been more than three.

I looked behind him. Surely it couldn’t have been the child! But there was no one else. “What is your name?” I confronted the little monster.

His mother was up the aisle and away from the cart. She had her eyes on the peanut butter. For heaven’s sake, just pick one, I thought. You shouldn’t leave your little beastie unsupervised!

“Legion, for we are many.” The demon challenged with a deep-throated, hoarse whisper. “What’s it to you?”

What was it to me? Hadn’t I already raised my own children? Hadn’t I already babysat enough ‘little monsters’? Surely I had! I was about done with all of that! But this little brat intrigued me. He was a feisty one for sure!

“Seems to me that you spoke first.” I went ahead and confronted the unruly and obnoxious ‘little devil’.

“Get back,” he growled again. “Or I’ll – ”

“Or you’ll what?” I couldn’t help it. I was amused. He didn’t scare me any. “Tell your mommy?”

Still his mother was disengaged. Now she was scouring over the jelly, for pities’ sake!

Much to my surprise the possessed child started to pull himself up and then slam himself back down in the cart and he began to scream this ear-piercing wail.

I instinctively jumped back. Well, all of his commotion got his mommy’s attention. She came rushing to her son’s defense.

“What’s the matter, Pumpkin? Did that lady frighten you?” And with that his ‘Mommy dearest’ bared back her lips and hissed in a controlled and forceful growl, “Stay back!”

Wow, I wondered. Where’d that come from?

So, it doesn't look like anyone gets my humor... If I am the only one that I have entertained then I guess that'll have to do. I've watched plenty of kids in my day and always found that if they had a problem behaving they came by it honestly.

What powerful writing and so true to life of so many little horrors these days. Even some parents can be this vile.

@Metta H Sadly true! I was just being a stinker though. Everyone seems to be writing paranormal and I'm not wired that way... :)

I think you'd be great at writing paranormal Audrey. I look forward to see more of your work, hopefully in the near future.
