Barbara Storey, 30 Aug '12

She sat staring out at the ocean, feeling the pull of the waves in her blood, letting them drag all her emotions up to the surface. This was how the ocean always affected her—it brought out every trace of melancholy she'd ever experienced, it seemed. Yet she loved it, could almost revel in the sheer depth of feeling, despite the sadness.

Suddenly she felt a shadow, a presence behind her. Without looking up, she knew it was him, probably worried about her long absence. She tried to wipe the tears from her face without him noticing—no luck. He knelt behind her, enclosing her body between his thighs and encircling her shoulders with his powerful arms, sheltering her completely from the cold, raw wind.

"What's up? You all right?"

She nodded and leaned back against him, smiling, but he reached to tip her chin around and up a little so he could see her face. He frowned.

"Then what's all this?"

"Haven't you ever wanted to just . . . let the blues in?" she asked quietly, enjoying the feel of his fingers as he traced the tear tracks on her cheeks.

"Hmmph."

Gently he took her shoulders and turned her around till she was facing him. Still protecting her within the circle of his arms, he silently demanded that she look into his eyes. She had to respond to the honesty she saw there—the love, the concern, and the frustration.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to worry you—I just had to. . . ."

"Time to let the blues back out," he said firmly in that rough, quiet voice she'd come to love so much, it gave her goose bumps just to hear it. He pulled her in close, wrapping his arms tight around her until all she could think of was his scent—cigarettes and soap and something . . . male that was only his—and his strength and how blessed she was that she was here, in his arms, wrapped in a hug that she never wanted to end.

"I think they're out," she finally whispered, and felt his lips brush across the top of her head.
